Teen superstars are the biggest personalities in the latest WTA rankings

Coco Gauff, Anett Kontaverit and Emma Raducanu are just some of the big names in the latest WTA rankings.

Despite only reaching the second round of the Australian Open, Raducanu still climbed into the world top 15 earlier this year, but fell from 12th to 13th following her exit in the first round at the Guadalajara Open.

The Briton was seeded first for the competition. However, she was forced to pull out deep in the third set against Daria Saville after sustaining a left hip injury.

After the game, Raducanu said: “I just wanted to say that I’m really sorry that I can’t play for you in Monterrey.

“I was having an amazing time, but I got injured in my last game and that means I can’t play.”

The US Open champion hasn’t recovered in time to play in Monterrey this week and now faces a race against time to be fit in time for Indian Wells, which starts next Monday.

Raducanu was replaced in 12th place by Jelena Ostapenko, who has been in exceptional form lately.

The former Roland Garros winner won in Dubai a fortnight ago and blackened this performance by reaching the semi-finals in Qatar.

Her race was finally interrupted by Estonia’s Kontaveit, who jumped two places in the standings to fifth place.

Kontaveit has been one of the hottest players in the world since the end of 2021 and could have a chance later in the year to become world number one when Ashleigh Barty is forced to defend a huge amount of points.

For now, however, Barty remains in the lead, having won his third major title in Melbourne in January.

Iga Swiatek, 20, beat Kontaveit in the Qatar Open final and moved up from eighth to fourth in the standings.

Likewise, Gauff moved up the same number of places, from 23rd to 19th, after reaching the quarter-finals in Doha.

The WTA Ranking is based on a 52-week cumulative system, where players earn points as a result of their tournament performances.

Winning a Grand Slam offers 2000 points, which is why Raducanu is so high right now.

Barty has finished as the number one ranked player for the past three years now, although the WTA introduced a protected ranking system for much of that time, due to the pandemic.
