Rugby transfer rumors and news: Leicester Tigers sign young star, Gloucester signs four

Gallagher Premiership’s new season is fast approaching with nearly all clubs returning to pre-season training over the next two weeks.

But the Premiership rugby directors continue to complete their squads ahead of the 2021/22 season.

Here are all of the latest rugby transfer rumors, confirmed moves and contract renewals.



London Irish’s Ben Meehan to score his side’s second try

Scrum-half joins Gloucester

Gloucester Rugby has confirmed scrum-half Ben Meehan will join the Cherry and Whites ahead of the 2021-22 season.

Leaving London Irish in April, Meehan is now ready to return to rugby after a period of absence.

The Australian was previously linked with a move to Kingsholm and has extensive experience having spent time playing for the Melbourne Rebels and also represented Australia at U20 level and played under George Skivington while he was forwards coach of the Exiles.

Jersey Reds full-back coach Ed Robinson participates in England training session this season

Former England manager joins Wasps coaching roster

The Wasps have recruited England coach Ed Robinson as part of their new coaching staff.

The Jersey Reds confirmed earlier this month that Robinson will be stepping down as the league’s full-back manager to “join an unnamed Premiership club”

The 28-year-old has now been confirmed as the new Wasps coach – a role he has filled for England from acting Eddie Jones this season for the Six Nations and recent Summer Internationals.

Son of former England and Scotland boss Andy, Robinson previously coached at Rotherham Titans, Clifton and Loughborough University.

As well as leading the skills program, he will also take care of the Wasps attacking out of lineups and melees.

Irish accessory out of London reunites with George Skivington

Loosehead mainstay Harry Elrington joined Gloucester Rugby ahead of the 2021-22 season.

After leaving the London Irish last month, Elrington will join the Cherry and Whites ahead of the new season and will be physically present at Kingsholm when he joins the club.

Gloucester head coach George Skivington, who himself left London Irish where he was Kingsholm forwards coach just over a year ago, said he was eager to see the graduate from Loughborough University join the team.

Elrington played more than 80 games for the London Irish during five seasons at the club.

The international backrower becomes Cherry and White

Gloucester Rugby has announced the signing of Namibian international backrower Wian Conradie.

The number eight joins the Cherry and Whites on the MLR side of the New England Free Jacks, but the 26-year-old has English rugby experience after playing for the Doncaster Knights in the RFU Championship.

Conradie is effective as a flanker or number eight and has won 19 caps for his country and has competed in the 2015 and 2019 Rugby World Cups.

England’s Dan Lancaster looks to beat Cathal Forde of Ireland in U20 Six Nations Rugby Championship

Tigers add England U20 center

Leicester Tigers have signed very versatile full-back Dan Lancaster from Leeds Tykes ahead of the 2021/22 season.

The 20-year-old, who is an accomplished kicker and capable of opening and center play, was a member of England’s Under-20 team which recorded a Grand Slam in the Under-20 Six Nations 2021, as well as new teammates Jack van Poortvliet, Emeka Ilione and Archie Vanes.

Tigers head coach Steve Borthwick said: “Dan is a determined and competitive young man eager to develop his game, whom we look forward to welcoming to the club before next season.

“He joins the Tigers after playing an important role in the Six Nations Under-20 Grand Slam campaign in England, alongside some of his new team-mates at Leicester.

“Dan is a versatile player, who plays open and cross, and adds significant depth to our senior team in these areas.”

Lancaster is Borthwick’s 12th addition ahead of the 2021/22 campaign alongside fellow full-backs Freddie Burns, Bryce Hegarty, Juan-Pablo Socino and forwards Dan Richardson, Eli Snyman, Marco Van Staden and Francois Van Wyk, as well as four graduates of the Leicester Tigers Academy.

Simonds is committed to the Wasps

Young center Will Simonds has extended his contract at Wasp.

The 21-year-old joined Wasps Senior Academy ahead of the 2018/19 season and progressed to the senior squad in July 2020.

The Wasps Under 18s graduate has played for the Wasps first team four times, most notably in his Premiership debut in the Saracens’ memorable away win in September 2020.

The Wasps AASE program graduate made his European debut for the Club in Agen in January 2020, before spending time on loan in the Championship with Nottingham Rugby.

Old Bath Lock joins Kingsholm recruiting wave

Gloucester Rugby has confirmed the signing of second row Will Britton ahead of the 2021/22 season.

The 24-year-old lock joins the Doncaster Nights Championship squad.

Standing at 6’5 and weighing 117kg, the former Bath Man will be an important presence in the Gloucester engine room and appears to have been brought in to replace another former Bath man, Matt Garvey, who has left the club last month and has since signed for the Worcester Warriors.

Australia’s Ollie Atkins also moved on at the end of the 2020/21 campaign, leaving Cherry and Whites short of options, especially during international windows with Alex Craig (Scotland) and Matia Alemanno (Argentina) light for move away from their country, leaving just Ed Slater and new recruit Andrew Davidson as senior lock specialists.
