Rugby authorities urge Premiership players to get Covid-19 vaccine | Prime Minister
Premiership players are “strongly encouraged” to get fully vaccinated by rugby authorities in England, with clubs offering incentives in an attempt to boost adoption.
The Premiership, Championship and Women’s Premier 15 clubs will all be allowed to relax Covid-19 protocols, end social distancing and wearing masks will no longer be mandatory in most contexts if they reach the 85% target in the game team and staff group, as defined by the Professional Game Board (PGB).
Neither Rugby Football Union nor Premiership Rugby would comment on the number of clubs currently reaching the 85% threshold, but a similar incentive policy has recently been introduced into football due to concerns over reluctance to vaccination. In May, Exeter and England center Henry Slade became one of the first top UK sportsmen to publicly state that he had no plans to get the shot.
“The health and safety of everyone involved in elite play is our priority and we know it is essential to ensure that the vast majority of players and management are fully immunized as soon as possible,” PGB Chairman Chris Booy said.
“It is always a personal choice to get yourself vaccinated, but we want to strongly encourage as many players and staff as possible to get vaccinated so that we can proactively contribute as much as possible to the safety of our communities in the world. broad sense and our players, our staff and our supporters. While we hope that it will not be necessary to reverse any of these proposed changes, the PGB will continue to review all [minimum operating standards] in accordance with government advice.
Existing testing protocols, which currently require a minimum of two lateral flow tests per week, are expected to remain, although in the Premiership the second must now be completed within 24 hours of a match. Masks should also always be worn by players and staff in medical rooms and for a match involving a club that has reached the 85% threshold and one that has not, only the club that has been authorized. to take advantage of the flexibilities.
