PARIS (AP) – Embarrassed by a painful hip, top-ranked Ash Barty retired from her second-round match at Roland Garros on Thursday, leaving the Grand Slam tournament on clay without her first two seeds female and none of the top three in the rankings.
The 2019 champion trailed 6-1, 2-2 when she signaled she could not continue against Polish opponent Magda Linette on the Philippe Chatrier court.
“I was struggling with the pain, and it got too intense and like I said, got dangerous,” Barty said of the injury that started in pre-tournament practice.
It was only the third time in a professional-era Grand Slam tournament, which began in 1968, that the top two female seeds have disappeared before the third round. It also happened at Roland Garros in 2014 (No.1 Serena Williams and No.2 Li Na) and at the US Open in 2018 (No.1 Simona Halep and No.2 Caroline Wozniacki).
In addition to Barty’s departure, No.2 Naomi Osaka withdrew after the first round, saying she was going to take a break from competition due to mental health concerns. The third Halep retired before the tournament with a leg injury.
In preparation for this year’s French Open, Barty played 13 clay court matches and won 11. She posted a 27-5 record and won three singles titles before Roland Garros. But she was forced to retire from the quarter-finals in Rome in May due to a right arm injury. She said the injury had healed and didn’t bother her in Paris.
“It’s heartbreaking,” Barty said. “We’ve had such a brilliant clay season, and having a little bit of bad luck with the timing, more than anything, to get something sharp to happen this weekend and just a little bit of time trial is disappointing. . “
The Australian started the match with her left thigh bandaged and it was immediately clear that she couldn’t move properly. Too slow to chase away her opponent’s shots, she struggled in long rallies and with her first serve.
Barty requested a medical time out at the end of the first set, then briefly left the pitch for treatment. She stopped after Linette hit an ace. Barty then walked over to the net to shake hands with the 45th-ranked player.
Already faced with her hip problem in the first round, Barty had a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 victory over Bernarda Pera, 70th.
“We did everything, absolutely everything we could, to give myself a chance,” Barty said. “It was a small miracle that we were able to enter the field for this first round. Again, today it was no better and was getting worse.
Barty decided not to defend her title last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, choosing instead to stay at home in Australia.
After ending a four-game losing streak on clay in the previous round, 2020 finalist Sofia Kenin advanced to the third round with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Hailey Baptiste.
Kenin has had a difficult start to the season. The 2020 Australian Open champion from the United States underwent an emergency appendectomy in Melbourne in February and her record was 7-8 entering the Grand Slam on clay.
Fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina also advanced, beating Ann Li of the United States 6-0, 6-4.
Svitolina combined deep shots from the baseline with smart net play in the first set and lost just five points on her serve. She recovered from a misstep at the start of the second set to win the last five games.
On the men’s side, Rafael Nadal will later face Richard Gasquet on the occasion of his 35th birthday. The 13-time champion is 16-0 against the French. Roger Federer is set to face 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic and top Novak Djokovic will face Pablo Cuevas.
