Samu Kerevi’s ankle injury could force Wallabies coach Dave Rennie to reconsider his plans for the spring tour.

A 32-17 complete loss to Argentina on Saturday will mean Australia travel to Japan and then Europe for testing against Japan, Scotland, England and Wales on a four-game winning streak .

No.12 Kerevi was instrumental in this change in fortunes, scoring a try before limping in the second half with a potentially serious ankle ligament injury.

The team, in training for 109 days for the Bledisloe Cup and the Rugby Championship, will take a break on Sunday for 10 days before regrouping before the test on October 23 in Oita.

They then play three tests in consecutive weeks in November, with Kerevi’s injury potentially serious enough to rule him out of them all.

Schedule changes due to Covid-19 have meant Super Rugby players have only had a few consecutive weeks off since late 2019.

It is understood that because of this, Rennie had planned to leave emerging talents like Noah Lolesio, Harry Wilson and Hunter Paisami at home for a full preseason.

The Paisami Center, unable to find a way to get back to the side after leaving for the birth of their child, could however now replace Kerevi.

“In my day it was called a sprained ankle. I think it’s syndesmosis now, ”Rennie said of Kerevi’s injury as he waits for scans to reveal the full extent.

“We’ll see how we get out of this, obviously there are question marks around Samu and there will be some bumps and bruises that we will have to look into.”

Buzzing after an unbeaten month, Wallabies skipper Michael Hooper plans to take advantage of his rare downtime before a crucial trip to the Northern Hemisphere.

“We’re gaining momentum, creating Wallaby rugby and sometimes we’re really dangerous, clinical and physical,” he said.

“This tour is a great opportunity for us; a lot of our guys haven’t been up north and we’ll have a World Cup there in two years.

“Having the opportunity to play in front of full stadiums, hopefully, is great for everyone and playing with different teams will present different challenges.”
