Quins and England star shows how beast he is in the gym
There’s no better way to reward yourself for a scoring try in the season opener than an intense squat session in the week, and that’s exactly what Harlequins center Joe Marchant did.
Fresh off Quins’ opener in the Gallagher Premiership title defense, a 26-20 victory over the Newcastle Falcons at Kingston Park, the club shared footage of the 25-year-old squatting 200kg in the gym this week.

Now compared to some props that share pictures of themselves on the squat rack, these aren’t quite the same numbers, but for a player who only weighs 89kg (14 stones), that’s extremely impressive. Pound for pound, there aren’t many players who could compete with Marching in the Gym. Plus, he produced three reps, suggesting he might get heavier, which might lend itself to a new video later.
This gym session may have been a celebration of the formation of Eddie Jones’ 45-man England squad who are set to meet for a training camp next week. Marchant has amassed six caps since his debut in August 2019, and although he has been a member of Jones’ training teams, he has struggled to consolidate a starting spot, having been on the bench in all of his six matches. except one, against Italy in September 2019.
However, Quins’ Premiership success last season would have helped Marchant’s cause considerably as he seeks to snatch the English No.13 shirt. If Jones had also chosen his players based on their performance in the gym, the Harlequin would have only increased his chances.
Quins will face Worcester Warriors at the Stoop this weekend ahead of English camp, then have a week off in the third round, which could give Marchant enough time to hit the squat rack again.
