Piros wins first Challenger crown at Tampere Open
TAMPERE/STARNBERG, July 24, 2022
Zsombor Piros is the champion of the 40th edition of the Tampere open. The clay-court event organized by Tampereen Tenniskeskus Oy is the oldest ATP Challenger Tour tournament. Finnish legend Jarkko Nieminen won the trophy in 2001 and 2002, David Goffin won it in 2014 and Swedish star Mikael Ymer in 2019. Czech youngster Jiri Lehecka was the champion last year.
Piros beat the French qualifier Harold Mayot 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 in Sunday’s singles final. The Hungarian No.5 seed used five of his 14 break point chances to seal the win in an hour and 46 minutes.

“The final was a rollercoaster” Piros said. “I lost my concentration in the second set, but at the same time Mayot started to play better. In the end, I just fought. I don’t know how I won since my opponent played so aggressively and better than me. It was a very mental fight since we were both looking for that first Challenger title. I’m just super happy to have it.
The world number 165 beat Swedish wild card Leo Borg, Italian Luigi Sorrentino, German Maximilian Marterer and Frenchman Laurent Lokoli en route to the title match. After five victories on the ITF Pro Tour, Piros claimed his first trophy on the ATP Challenger Tour. The 22-year-old Budapest native won €6,190 in prize money along with a valuable 80 ATP ranking points.
“I am extremely happy with my first ATP Challenger title,” Piros said. “It’s been a long journey from juniors to this moment. When I won the Australian Open junior title in 2017, I thought the transition would be quicker and easier than it was. I’ve worked so hard and now I just hope more will come.
Austrians win in doubles
Saturday, Alexander Erler and Lucas Mieder won the doubles title. The top-seeded Austrians beat the fourth seed Karol Drzewiecki from Poland and home favorite Patrik Niklas-Salminen 7-6(3), 6-1 in an hour and 11 minutes.
In winning their sixth Challenger tag team title, their third of the season, Erler and Miedler split €2,670 in prize money and collected 80 ATP Double ranking points.
