Naomi Osaka was not allowed to wear the latest Tag Heuer watch at the Australian Open

Former World No. 1 Naomi Osaka unveiled a new limited-edition model of the TAG Heuer Aquaracer just before the start of the Australian Open. Unfortunately for Osaka and the Tag Heuer company, the Japanese were not allowed to take to the field with the Aquaracer Professional 300 Naomi Osaka Limited Edition.

If you’re wondering why Osaka wasn’t allowed to wear the latest watch in their Australian Open matches, it’s because the Aquaracer falls under the category of communication devices. Players are not allowed to communicate with others off the court during their matches, which is why the Australian Open organizers did not let Osaka onto the court wearing the brand new Tag Heuer watch.

“We tried, but she can’t wear a smartwatch when playing professionally because players aren’t allowed to communicate with others off the pitch during a game. And that would be considered a communication tool” , TAG Heuer CEO Frédéric Arnault said in an interview last week, according to tennis.com.

Osaka failed to defend their title

Osaka made the Australian Open third round before losing to Amanda Anisimova. Rising American star Anisimova recovered from a set down to stun Osaka 4-6 6-3 7-6 (5). “I thought his comeback was really amazing,” Osaka said after the loss.

“I almost felt like I was fighting for my life in some games. Honestly, I also thought that I won some games just out of sheer willpower. It’s quite interesting when you play against someone, you also want to learn from them.

Because I also want to come back as she comes back. So I will definitely go to the training ground and try to practice my returns – maybe not tomorrow but when. It was an exciting game for me. I hope everyone who watched it was thrilled.”
