Itoje, Watson and Cowan-Dickie doubt England’s fall squad | England rugby union team
England are sweating over the fitness of Maro Itoje, Anthony Watson and Luke Cowan-Dickie ahead of their fall squad announcement on Monday.
Itoje and Watson both left the field early in the Saracens’ 71-17 loss to Bath at Recreation Ground, while Exeter’s Cowan-Dickie limped with an ankle problem at Wasps on Saturday. Itoje received a blow to the shoulder and was substituted after 48 minutes while Watson strained a knee in free play late in the game.
Saracens rugby manager Mark McCall said on Sunday night the exact nature of Itoje’s injury remained unclear. âWe don’t know at this time if it’s the shoulder muscle or the pecs,â McCall said. “We don’t know how bad it is yet.”
Bath, whose loss was the heaviest home league loss in club history, said early signs were Watson’s injury “not too bad”.
McCall believes Jones has no choice but to recall brothers Vunipola and Jamie George, among others, after the Saracens’ superb 10-try performance in front of the national coach. “I would be amazed [if he doesnât]”said McCall.
âI think everyone would like the way they played today. If Eddie wanted to see their motivation and desire to continue playing for their country, they showed it – and their quality.
âWe expect to have a lot more players on the team and I think they deserve to be there after today. I thought Billy was unreal and Mako was too. Owen Farrell led the team superbly⦠they all played well, with England set to face Tonga at Twickenham in their first fall test on 6 November.
