Huddersfield Giants captain delighted with England call-up – TotalRL.com | Rugby League Express
Women’s Super League Shield winners Huddersfield Giants now have two representatives in the England performance squad after Bethan Oates was called up.
The hooker captained the Giants last year and joins new signing Shona Hoyle on the international practice squad ahead of this fall’s World Cup.
“I’m really proud of myself after being included in the squad. I didn’t expect to be here, but I worked hard last season and now I’m really excited to start,” Oates told League. Express.
“Getting promoted to the Super League and then winning the Shield really saw some of the girls from Huddersfield stand out and it certainly helped me get to where I am now.
“I really fit in with this team. The girls are all very welcoming and it’s nice to get to know a lot of different girls from different clubs. Normally when you play against them you usually give them well done and go home at your place, so it was nice to see their personalities.
“I know you need to play with some structure in Rugby League, but I also play off the cuff so I can add something a little different. As captain of Huddersfield I can play the role of leader and help some of the younger ones.
“I’ve never had such an opportunity before, so to be able to develop my game and push to win a shirt at this year’s Rugby League World Cup is absolutely huge for me, my family and my club.”
England women’s head coach Craig Richards added: “We are really delighted to have added Bethan to the England women’s performance squad. She put in several impressive performances in 2021, including in the women’s Super League Shield final.
“She’s a hard worker, a great decision maker from the interim halfback and she has strong leadership qualities.
“She will add even more competition for places within our squad as we continue to progress towards the Rugby World Cup.”
England Women will start their Rugby League World Cup campaign on Tuesday November 1 at Headingley Stadium against Brazil before facing Canada at DW Stadium on November 5 and then returning to Leeds to complete the group stage against Papua New Guinea on Wednesday 9 November.
