Fears of another Victoria lockdown as state weighs in further restrictions
Victorians are anxiously awaiting to see if they will be returned to lockdown after a worrying spike in Covid-19 cases today.
the Sun Herald reports that the state government is holding high-level meetings this afternoon to determine whether to reimpose restrictions on Melbourne, with site limits and caps for home visitors among the options being considered.
An announcement would be expected tomorrow.
“I have to find all the cases that exist to bring them under control, and obviously we have to continue to work very closely with our arrivals in the red zone to make sure that these flying embers do not ignite any more,” said Victoria’s Covid-19 Commander. Jeroen Weimar told reporters earlier Wednesday.
ABC host Patricia Karvelas said Melbourne residents were “on high alert again”. “I feel tense. Worried. Are we about to have a third lockdown for 2021. It’s relentless,” she tweeted.
Goalkeeper Australia Journalist Melissa Davey said there was “no way (the Victorian government) could delay any restrictions it deems necessary given the way Delta is spreading in New South Wales.”
“It’s going to be so crazy if we get sent to our fifth lockdown because of a mover from Sydney not wearing a mask,” Choice reporter Jarni Blakkarly tweeted.
Victoria registered eight new cases on Wednesday, including seven linked to a returning family and a team of movers, both of whom entered NSW state.
But on Wednesday night, another case emerged at a Bacchus Marsh school along with reports of two more cases that would bring today’s number to 10.
Potential exhibition venues include a large Melbourne shopping center and an AFL game.
It starts very quickly. It’s hard to see how Vic doesn’t end up in Lockdown no. 5 https://t.co/RbnwQRfFF0
