England caption on what Marcus Smith’s emergence could mean for Farrell
“Notice, whenever we talk about people Eddie Jones should choose, he never chooses them!” “
The 2021/22 Gallagher Premiership season started on Friday night with the Saracens reminding us all that they are back and will be looking to make up for lost time. Ben Kay is not the only one to follow closely his first season after a short stint in the league.
The former Leicester, England and Lions star is part of the BT Sport squad which will cover the Premiership season in the usual full fashion.
We caught up with Kay before the start of the season and got his take on three young Premiership stars to pay close attention to. He also gave his opinion on who could end the season as England captain.
Marcus Smith (Harlequins)
Obviously there are a few guys who started breaking in and, with the Lions in mind, there is so much pressure on Marcus Smith due to his performances at the end of last season. He did well with his opportunities for England when the Lions were out, got his call. But I just think, potentially, all of these changes in the law might be fine with him.
And if there’s a time to try out any of these new guys, it’s a fall streak two years away from a World Cup. That’s when you look at the guys and see if they’re in the running to stay on the squad and be successful in two years. And you absolutely have to watch Marcus Smith for that.
He is probably in pole position, among the people who should have a chance. Mind you, whenever we talk about people Eddie Jones should choose, he never chooses them, so he probably won’t be!
Freddie Steward (Leicester Tigers)
Freddie Steward probably cemented his place there in the back [for England]. He was so good and looked so confident internationally. Why wouldn’t Eddie pick him as a full-back now? Especially with⦠this is an area where he couldn’t quite put his finger on the answer. But, again, the new laws are probably playing Steward’s game a bit, in terms of insurance at the back, especially with that 50/22 kick, and for such a young man.
Adam Radwan (Newcastle Falcons)
Adam Radwan at Newcastle, if he is having a good season, is one to watch. Like I said, this fall is the time to play a few people even if it’s just the Tonga game. But, like I said, once you get that shot, if you take it it’s very hard to let go even if you don’t play the next week. Completely remove yourself from the team.
Kay also believes the England captain could be something Eddie Jones could take a close look at, if not at the fall internationals and then in 2022.
âThe other extremely interesting thing,â he said, âwill potentially be around the captain’s post, and if he thinks, do I stick with what I have? come in with Marcus Smith Maybe not in the fall series, but what are the other options for the England captain?
âWe know what Owen Farrell does for England and how important he is. Do we need to try someone else, in case you don’t want to put Owen Farrell in there. i just wonder if Tom Curry could get a shout out. He’s pretty much the first name on the squad sheet, kind of plays heads and is still very composed, off the pitch, with everything he’s got. made.
“It’s kind of like the situation where, I don’t compare them, but Brian O’Driscoll and Paul O’Connell. You have two guys who could be fantastic captains, all the time, all the time.”
