Emma Raducanu confirmed for her first swing in Central America

Emma Raducanu has confirmed her participation in two Mexican WTA 250 events, the Abierto Zapopan and the Monterrey Open, and will be joined by a prestigious company.

19-year-old US Open champion Raducanu has been absent from the tour since the Australian Open last month as she decided to focus on training rather than competitions to develop her fitness.

It concerned Germany’s greatest male player of all time, Boris Becker, who felt she had to ‘throw herself into the depths of the WTA Tour’. The Abierto Zapopan will only be Raducanu’s tenth tour.

After knocking out 2017 US Open winner Sloane Stephens in the first round, Raducanu battled blisters in her second round match against world number 72 Danka Kovinic.

Following her ‘Happy Slam’ performances, the British starlet climbed the WTA rankings to a career-high 12th in the world. This will make her the best player in Guadalajara.

Raducanu will enjoy a year of firsts as this is his first full season on the WTA Tour. After a first Australian Open, Raducanu has now been confirmed to take part in a first Central American swing at Abierto Zapopan in Guadalajara and Abierto Seguros in Monterrey.

Alongside Raducanu at both tournaments are world number 56 Sloane Stephens, Australian Open semi-finalist Madison Keys and defending Guadalajara champion Sara Sorribes Tormo.

The Guadalajara event will take place from February 21-27, while the Monterrey Open will take place from February 28-March 6.

Four former Monterrey winners will join week two of the Mexican swing, with record four-time champion Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, defending champion Leylah Fernandez, 2020 winner Elina Svitolina and 2016 winner and fellow Brit Heather Watson.

Raducanu had a message for his fans in the form of a Twitter video. She said “Hi everyone, I just wanted to say I can’t wait to come over there and play the Abierto Akron Zapopan tournament.

“I can’t wait to compete again and see Mexico for the first time, I’ll see you soon.”
