Barbie has added tennis star Naomi Osaka to her Role Model series.

A new Barbie doll inspired by tennis star Naomi Osaka was sold just hours after its release on Monday.

The new doll is part of the Barbie Role Model series and holds a Yonex tennis racket, according to a press release from toy company Mattel.

He sports a Nike tennis dress and a white visor, and Osaka tweeted that she was wearing at the 2020 Australian Open.

“I hope every kid will remember that he can be and do anything,” Osaka added in his tweet.

The 23-year-old won her first Grand Slam title in 2018 at the US Open. The four-time Grand Slam winner is an outspoken figure on the professional tennis circuit and regularly addresses human rights, racial injustice and mental health in interviews.

Barbie commissioned designer Carlyle Nuera to make the doll, and he spoke of her admiration for Osaka.

“Obviously, Naomi’s athletic skills are unmatched, that’s a fact,” Nuera said in the press release. “But what I personally admire most about Naomi Osaka is the way she uses her platform, the spotlight on her and her voice, to raise awareness for social justice.”

This is Osaka’s second time collaborating with Barbie, following her appearance in 2019 as one of the brand’s Shero dolls.

Earlier this month, the video streaming service Netflix released a trailer for its documentary series “Naomi Osaka,” which focuses on her life and her struggles to be catapulted into the public eye.

“Naomi Osaka,” as told personally by the tennis player, reflects on her upbringing and how her 2018 US Open victory turned her into an “overnight superstar”. The Japanese world No. 2 has revealed that she has “suffered from long periods of depression” since the 2018 victory. The Netflix series will premiere on July 16.

Osaka will return to competitive tennis at the Tokyo Olympics after withdrawing from Roland Garros, citing mental health reasons. She later announced that she had also withdrawn from this year’s Wimbledon tournament.
