Australians who are fully vaccinated can finally fly abroad without derogation after 590 days of closure of the country’s international borders.

As of today, the biggest restrictions on international travel fall after several months of limits throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

Kate Jackson and her husband are on the first Qantas flight to the UK on Monday night for a friend’s wedding, which has been canceled twice due to COVID-19.

Ms Jackson said when her friends booked their wedding for November 5, they still didn’t think they could make it to the UK.

She said the couple were “so excited” to jump on the plane even though cases of COVID-19 were still high in the UK.

“I am fully vaccinated, so I hope it won’t be too much of a problem for my health,” Ms. Jackson said.

“I’m just more concerned about the travel implications because you have to test negative to get on the flight.”

For Australians in the United States, getting a return flight has been very difficult.

Nicholas Skarajew flew to Australia on critical business.

“United have been pretty blunt about this: well you can leave, but there’s only a 50% chance you can come back,” he said.

Others have been stranded for much longer, unable even to secure an extremely expensive return flight in addition to the thousands of dollars it costs for two weeks in hotel quarantine.

Izabella Menz is finally preparing to return home on the third flight booking she made.

“I am ecstatic,” she said.

“I’ve wanted to come home for a while. It’s so good now that everything is opening up again.”

For those vaccinated, the mandatory hotel quarantine ends in New South Wales at midnight on October 31.

Not having to quarantine on arrival in Australia will make the trip much more bearable.

Rozlyn Collier flies to Australia for her father’s funeral.

“In mourning, I could not enter quarantine,” she said.

Australians will be able to visit Singapore from November 8 and Fiji from December 1.

Australia still considers Thailand a higher risk, but Thai Airways is increasing its flights from November 17.
