What happened on Sunday July 11, 2021

This is where we will end today’s live coverage of Covid news.

Here are the main developments:

  • Sydney containment is likely to be extended after the worsening of the Covid epidemic which increased by 77 cases on Sunday and resulted in the first death from locally acquired coronavirus in Australia in 2021. Prime Minister Gladys Berejiklian warned she would be shocked if daily cases did not exceed 100 from tomorrow and into the days to come.
  • New South Wales has recommended Sydney residents to advance their second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine by six weeks after the first, with doctors and general practitioners saying it is a ‘fair compromise’ given of the state’s epidemic.
  • Victoria declared the entirety of New South Wales a red zone, effectively closing its border to the exception of returning Victorian residents. However, returning residents will need to be quarantined for 14 days. The red zone declaration, which comes into effect from midnight tonight, also applies to Australian Capital Territory although no locally acquired cases have been reported in the territory.
  • The Commonwealth Government is working to expand its assistance measures to help states deal with Covid, following the worsening epidemic in New South Wales.
  • The Morrison government’s latest attempt to vaccination campaign urging Australians to “arm themselves” has landed flat, even the opposition leader joking that it would be difficult for the nation’s satirists to stand up.
  • The Federal Government will also broadcast a separate, “graphic and confrontational” advertisement across Sydney from Sunday evening, which shows a young woman breathless in hospital, in an attempt to prevent residents from breaking the rules. strict lockdowns.

We wish all of our readers in Sydney a warm and safe night.

We will be back tomorrow morning to redo everything.

the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and the Australian Medical Association both supported NSW Health’s call for Sydney residents to advance their second dose of AstraZeneca to six weeks after the first dose.

Both RACGP and WADA have said the six-week window makes sense, as it will provide faster protection against the capture, spread and also potential death of Covid-19.

Dr. Charlotte Hespé, RACGP’s NSW chairman also said people who brought in their doses earlier would be the first to receive booster shots later, which would extend their immunity. Hespe told Guardian Australia:

We will definitely be looking to give boosters for those who get it early.

You will actually have an advantage to arrive early, as we will keep you on this list. “

She also said GPs would focus on rolling out vaccines in southwest Sydney.

WADA Vice-President Dr Chris Moysaid the six-week window was good advice given the situation in New South Wales.

“It’s a fair compromise,” he said.

On Twitter, there appears to be a bit of frustration with the Federal Government’s “graphic and confrontational” advertising campaign of a breathless young woman in hospital who will be crossing Sydney from tonight.

Bill Bowtell AO
(@billbowtell)

This ad should be taken off the air immediately. Today in Sydney, a young girl with Covid – about the same age as the actor in the commercial – is on a ventilator and fighting for her life. This callous announcement can only upset his family and friends. It is misunderstood from all points of view. @JoshButler https://t.co/9FfT9jJNDH

“Book your vaccination”.
The woman in this ad does not look old enough to be eligible for the larger immunization program. What an insult. https://t.co/XHVEQBzvEY

This government cannot even tell us when exactly the general vaccination program will be open to those under 40 years of age.

What can the frightening tactics accomplish, besides distress (and fury) here?

The vast majority of Australians under 40 are not eligible for the one vaccine that they have been repeatedly told is the only one they can safely receive because we don’t have enough.

I can’t even with that. https://t.co/BAGaxD7Daj

Here’s a recap of the top Covid news out of Sydney today:

The worsening of the Covid epidemic in Sydney increased by 77 cases and resulted in the first death from locally acquired coronavirus in Australia in 2021, with the premier of New South Wales Gladys Berejiklian warning that she will be “shocked” if daily cases do not exceed 100 tomorrow.

Head of Health Song of Kerry is so concerned about the trajectory of the Sydney epidemic that she is begging anyone who has ever received a dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine to talk to their doctor about reducing the interval between their first and second dose from three months to six weeks – grateful for sacrificing “a little long term protection” was warranted.

A 90-year-old woman from southwest Sydney, who authorities said was unvaccinated, died in Liverpool hospital on Saturday, hours after returning a positive result.

The woman caught the virus at home from a family member – one of 50 of the 77 cases announced on Sunday who were close family members of existing Covid cases.

Authorities fear that 33 of the 77 new cases are infectious in the community, with many of the new cases announced on Sunday being described as “fairly historic going back five, six or seven days” between the initial infection and the return of a positive test .

How awesome Ash barty?

If you didn’t watch the Wimbledon final last night and are just watching the news, here is a match report written by my colleague Tumaini Carayol who was at Wimbledon.

Barty’s victory comes 50 years after Evonne Goolagong Cawley was crowned Wimbledon champion for the first time.

Here is an excellent photographic exploration of their two careers:

And of course, Barty isn’t the only Australian winner at Wimbledon this year.

Wheelchair Tennis King Dylan alcott made a supreme defense of his singles crown at Wimbledon, moving closer and closer to a potential “golden slam” of titles for the calendar year.

Here is the “graphic and confrontational” announcement that the Lt Gen vaccine deployment supremo John Frewen and chief physician Paul Kelly Just announced.

The ads will only air in Sydney from tonight and are designed to show people the serious illness they are at risk of if they don’t comply with lockdown restrictions in the city.

Before watching it, it’s important to reiterate that this ad is facing, so some of you might find it uncomfortable to watch.

It shows a young woman hospitalized breathless and does not include any dialogue.
