Anet Kontaveit vs. Irina Bara preview
Top seed Anet Kontaveit will face world number 125 Irina Bara in the first round of the European Open Hamburg 2022 on Tuesday.
Kontaveit had a very successful 2021, winning four titles and finishing second in the WTA Finals. However, it has been rather inconsistent this year, posting strong results as well as a few early releases.
The Estonian contracted COVID-19 in April and has suffered a string of early losses since then due to struggles with her fitness.
Kontaveit’s best result during the clay season was a quarter-final at the Stuttgart Open. She failed to win a match at the Italian Open and the French Open.
After a second-round loss at Wimbledon, she took a wildcard to compete in Hamburg. The world No. 2 is desperate for a few wins to boost her confidence and is hoping for a strong performance in the German city.
Irina Bara evolves mainly on the Challenger and ITF circuits. However, this year she took a big leap forward by making her Australian Open and Wimbledon debuts. While she lost in the first round in Melbourne, she qualified for the second round at the All England Club.
Bara won his fourth Challenger-level title this year. Teaming up with Ekaterine Gorgodze, the duo won the title in Marbella. At WTA level, his main draw record for the year is 3-5, with a Copa Colsanitas quarter-final in Bogota being his best result.
Bara has already got off to a winning start in Hamburg. She won her first doubles round alongside compatriot Monica Niculescu on Sunday.

Anet Kontaveit vs Irina Bara Prediction
On paper, Kontaveit is the overwhelming favorite to win this contest. But given her recent struggles, partly due to her health, she could have her hands full with Bara.
The Estonian’s results on clay have gradually deteriorated over the years. After winning a total of 22 games on the surface in 2017 and 2018, Kontaveit has won a total of 16 games over the past four years.
If she returns to her best, this could be her chance to make a deep run in a clay-court event. Bara doesn’t have too much experience at the WTA level and has lost her previous two matches against the top 10 players.
Kontaveit’s powerful play could prove quite overwhelming for the Romanian. Bara lacks firepower in her groundstrokes and will aim to counter the world No. 2 with some finesse and consistent shooting.
Kontaveit has plenty of points to defend in the coming months, so doing well here will certainly take the pressure off his shoulders. The Estonian might start slow but should eventually be able to overcome her opponent and move forward further.
Take: Anett Kontaveit wins in straight sets.
