Canadian tennis star Bianca Andreescu announced she will not compete in the 2022 Australian Open on Monday.

Andreescu explained her decision on Twitter, saying she wanted to “reset, recover and grow” after two “difficult” years that included testing positive for Covid-19.

“Hello everyone. As you all know, the last two years have been very difficult for me for various reasons,” Andreescu wrote.

“Especially this year in particular, I spent several weeks in self-quarantine, which affected me a lot – both mentally and physically. In addition, my grandmother spent several weeks in intensive care for a COVID infection, something that hit me really hard. “

“A lot of days I didn’t feel like myself, especially while training and / or playing games. I felt like I was carrying the world on my shoulders. I couldn’t let go of everything. what was happening off the pitch; felt the collective sadness and turmoil and it took its toll on me, ”said the 21-year-old.

“I want to give myself more time to get back in place, recover and grow from this [as cliche as that sounds] and continue to inspire by doing charity work, giving back and working on myself because I know that by doing this, I will come back stronger than ever. So I won’t be starting my season in Australia this year, but I will take a little more time to think, train and be ready for the next 2022 tennis season, “she concluded.

2019 US Open champion Andreescu finished her 2021 season ranked 46th. After missing the 2020 season with injury, Andreescu, a former world No.4, played her first game in over a year at the Australian Open in February.

Less than two months later, she was in a WTA 1000 final at the Miami Open, where she claimed victories over Garbine Muguruza and Maria Sakkari before retiring to the final against No.1 Ashleigh Barty.

Andreescu, 21, would make a quarterfinal for the remainder of the season. She announced a split from coach Sylvain Bruneau in June and brought in veteran coach Sven Groeneveld ahead of the hard-court summer season.

The new pair gave a strong performance in the round of 16 at the US Open. Andreescu ended his 2021 campaign with a third round loss to Anett Kontaveit in Indian Wells.
